A Journey Back to Work After 50, and Exploring Alternative Avenues

The Beginning

I know I’m dating myself here in this article, but this needs to be said. Even if it is just me saying it for myself. I don’t know where to begin, but from the beginning.

When my kids were younger, my husband and I decided that I would stay home with them, as it seemed every time we turned around, our daughter was getting sick with extreme ear infections. So, since I was always the one to call in to work because she was ill, I ended up losing that job. At the time, I had a good job working as an Administrative Assistant with the state of Florida.

What’s Not Working

Now that the kids are grown and I’m in my 50s, I’ve decided to go back to work. But it is not turning out as I had planned. Things have changed dramatically since I last worked, including how you apply for jobs, the assessments you are required to take, and even the tax system. The skills I once possessed no longer align with the new skills employers are seeking.

So I have three things against me so far when looking for work. First, I am in my 50s; second, I haven’t worked in over 19 years; and third, my skills need some improvement, or I need to acquire new ones. As a bonus, I am only looking for remote work, allowing me to work from home. This means you get those all-so-fun assessments to take, and when faced with a test, I freak out, and then I mess up the test and fail.

Alternative Solutions

Since I haven’t been able to secure a position anywhere as an employee, I have opted to try other things for a couple of bucks. I have taken on some contract work here and there, played games for money, and now I’m blogging. I currently have two blogs. My literary blog is Rekindled Pages, and my lifestyle blog is Penned Simplicity. I am still currently working on both blogs. I enjoy writing, so I hope to come up with some good blog posts for both blogs. In addition to my writing, I also enjoy beadwork and occasionally sell some of my pieces.

Work From Home

My question to you, my friends, is: would you like me to share some remote work opportunities with you? Even if the jobs didn’t work out for me, I would love to share them with you. I may not be able to compete with the big work-at-home blogs, but I can share the good jobs that come my way. They are all legit jobs and are not scams. Many people believe that most work-at-home jobs are scams, but this is not the case. What I share will be vetted and legit. I will review them for you before I consider posting an available job.
